TOMS RIVER, NJ — Working the night shift can bring police officers into contact with any manner of animals, including deer, missing dogs and cats, and other wildlife.

It's not often, however, that that Toms River police officers encounter large livestock, especially on the town's more heavily traveled roads.

So when Patrolman Chris Inglis saw a horse running along Massachusetts Avenue and then onto Route 70, getting the animal corraled and safe became his top priority.

The incident happened June 14, said Jillian Messina, a spokesperson for the Toms River Police Department.

Inglis first encountered the horse as it ran north on Massachusetts Avenue, and as he and Patrolmen William Pestalozzi, Michael Weg, and Daniel Burke tried to stop it, the horse headed east on Route 70, police said in a post n Facebook.

The horse finally stopped in the parking lot of the Stop 'n' Shop, where it was corralled, police said.

'Our officers located the horse's owner, and escorted him to the Stop 'n' Shop where they were reunited,' police said.
