Panoramic or ultra-wide- angle photography, dates back to the earliest years. In 1845, six years after photography was invented, Friedrich Von Martens, a German living in Paris, constructed his own panoramic camera. The lens moved horizontally in a 150-degree arc and produced an image measuring 5x15 inches on to a curved film. When the pictures were seen, they created a sensation. The broad, sweeping vistas of mountain ranges and city scapes were quite unlike pictures taken with conventional cameras.
Recently there has been a resurgence of interest in this kind of photography. Manufacturers in the United States, Switzerland, Japan and Germany have introduced cameras which are a far cry from the massive early models. Most use either 35mm, 120 roll film, or a mix of 120 roll and 4x5 sheet film. The images vary from broad, panoramic sweeps encompassing as much as 360 degrees to ultra-wide views up to 100 degrees. Here is a list of some of these unusual cameras and their technical specifications.
From the U.S., the ultra-modernistic looking 'GlobusScope' 35mm panoramic camera weighs three and one-half pounds. The mechanism is housed in a stainless steel body. When the shutter release is pressed, a revolving slit controls shutter speed instead of the usual focal plane or leaf- type shutter. The camera rotates one complete turn around its axis. The speed of the shutter is controlled by activating a switch at the base of the camera body.
At 'fast' rotation, the camera makes the turn in one full second giving the equivalent speed of 1/200 second. Switching to 'slow' causes the turn to be made in six seconds and gives the equivalent shutter speed of 1/100 second. In both instances, a 360 degree picture is created. The built-in spring-wound motor with its gearless, fluid-drive action permits exceptionally smooth and silent operation and eliminates the need for electricity or batteries. The 25mm lens has F stops from F3.5 to F22, and its fixed focus design produces sharp pictures from 6 feet to infinity. Standard 35mm, 36 exposure film loads deliver 8-360 degree pictures.
From Japan, the Fujica G617 weighs close to five pounds and measuring approximately 10 inches wide, 5 1/2 inches high, and 8 inches deep uses 120 roll film. Four pictures measuring 6x17 cm. per roll give an 80 degree field of view. The lens, a 105mm F8 Fujinon with a Seiko leaf- type shutter mounted in a helical focusing mount delivers bright, sharp images. The shutter has speeds from B (time exposure) to 1/500 second. A bright, optical finder atop the camera shows the field of view encompassed by the lens. A winding lever advances the film from one frame to the next, requiring four strokes to accomplish the change. There is no range finder so the lens must be focused manually. Pictures may be made easily without tripod.
From Switzerland, the 'Sinar Handy' is a 4x5 camera that also takes 120 roll film of varying formats. The body is pancake thin in shape and accepts six interchangeable lenses. This model has the greatest degree of flexibility of any of the cameras listed here. In the 4x5 size, black and white and color films of many types may be utilized. Or, switching to a choice of Polaroid backs, pictures may be made in 60 seconds in either black and white or color, in both 4x5 and 3- 1/4x4- 1/2 inch formats.

Sinar has also introduced a 120 roll film back for this camera (that may also be used on other 4x5 camera with 4x5 international (Graflok) backs. The unique feature is the variety of different format sizes that may be used by means of an internal masking mechanism. It is possible to produce 4 1/2x6, 6x6, 6x7, 6x9, and 6x12 cm. on the standard 120 roll film. The following lenses are available; 47, 65, 75, 90, 100, and 120mm focal lengths.
Each lens is fitted with its own helical focusing mount, and individual leaf-type shutter with speeds from B (time exposure) to 1/500 second. A control lever on the lens board allows displacing the lens up to 20mm up, down, or sideways. This permits precise perspective control for those challenging architectural pictures requiring straight lines. A cleverly designed optical finder shows the field of view for any lens or film format selected, and makes it simple to use this camera without a tripod.
Where exacting composition is required, there is the option of using a built-in ground glass back and a tripod. Although the 'Sinar Handy' will not produce a 360 degree picture, it does present the user with the widest variety of wide-angle formats, and film sizes in this entire group. From Japan, comes the smallest (6x3- 3/8x2 3/8 inches) and lightest (one pound, 14 ounces) panoramic camera - the 'Widelux' This easily hand- held camera uses standard 35mm film and produces a negative measuring 1x2-1/3 inches. The camera achieves its astonishing 140 degree angle of view by means of an ingenious device which enables the 26mm F2.8 lens to move in a 140 degree arc while the picture is being taken.
Although there is some minimal distortion at the center of the picture (for example, a straight line when photographed parallel to the camera will show evidence of some 'bowing' at the center) in most cases the distortion will be unobjectionable.
A level built into the camera body will help minimize other forms of distortion caused when the camera is pointed up or down. The lens is of fixed focus design and with sufficient depth of field to show everything from 6 feet to infinity in sharp focus. Three shutter speeds, 1/15, 1/125, and 1/ 250 second are more than ample for most wide angle subjects. A built-in optical view finder makes the camera as easy to use as any standard 35mm type.
Film is advanced by means of a knob atop the camera which, at the same time, also cocks the shutter and incorporates a double-exposure prevention device. Using standard 35mm 36 exposure film 21 exposures can be made (11 exposures on a 20 exposure roll.
From Germany, the Plaubel 69WProshift Superwide camera, uses 120 roll film and produces 4 pictures measuring 56-83mm (8 pictures when 220 roll film is used.) The lens is a sharp-cutting Schneider Super-Angulon 47mm in focal length, and with a maximum aperture of F5.6. The Copal shutter has speeds from B (time exposure) to 1/500 second. A built-in helical focusing mount permits manual focusing.
The special feature of this camera is its built-in perspective control device. A lever in front of the camera may be loosened to allow the lens to be shifted 13mm horizontally and 15mm vertically. The detachable optical finder automatically corrects for parallax when using the lens in its shift modes. A film wind lever on top of the camera requires two strokes to advance the film. Weight of the camera is 3 1/2 pounds and dimensions are 205mm length, 124mm height, and 132mm width.
From Switzerland, a precision-built panoramic camera called the Alpa Roto 70. Film is size either 120,220 or 70mm roll film. The detachable 70mm magazine may be loaded with 15 feet of film. An electrically governed motor rotates the camera in one direction while, at the same time, a belt drive moves the film in the other direction.
One of the unique features of this camera is the built-in ability to vary its angle of view from 90 to 360 degrees. The 75mm Rodenstock Grandagon 75mm F6.8 lens may be raised more than 30mm for perspective control. the removable, electrically driven motor has an electronic speed control with effective exposure times possible of 1/250, 1/125, 1/60, 1/30, and 1/15 second. The weight of the camera is a hefty 17 pounds, and it measures 12x9x8 inches. Power source is either house current, or a rechargeable nicad battery.
From Germany, Linhof has designed and built two cameras for panoramic photography. Some of the enormous color pictures that have amazed and delighted passersby at Grand Central Station with their breathtaking clarity and magnificent color were produced with the Technorama, a panoramic camera that uses 120 roll film and produces a photograph measuring 2 1/4x6 3/4 inches.
The 90mm Schneider Super Angulon with its F5.6 maximum opening is mounted in a leaf-type shutter with speeds from B (time exposure) to 1/ 500 second. A helical focusing mount is used to manually set distances. The 120 roll film delivers 4 panoramic pictures relatively free of distortion. There is a built-in double-exposure prevention device. The well designed optical view finder also incorporates a level that is visible while the picture is being taken. This helps avoid distortion caused by inadvertently tilting the camera. There is even provision for flash, unusual in cameras of this type. Using a special bracket, two flash units are mounted atop the camera and angled 30 degrees outward from the center. This provides even illumination with no hot spots in the picture.

The back of the camera may be removed for easy film loading, and a spring-loaded pressure plate coupled with a precision-milled film-guide channel insures the necessary film flatness for sharp pictures.

The other model from Linhof is the 'Technorama 612 PC.' This is a compact version of the 'Technorama' with somewhat less degree of wide- angle coverage. This camera produces 6 smaller pictures (measuring 6x12cm) to the roll instead of 4 pictures of its bigger brother. The well- designed optical view finder incorporates a level, visible in the finder while the picture is being taken. There is also a reference cross in the center of the finder for exact camera orientation. Two interchangeable lenses are available, a 65mm F5.6 Schneider Super Angulon, for wide- angle coverage, and a 135mm F5.6 Symmar(Schneider) lens for more normal coverage. Both lenses have leaf-type Compur shutters with B (time exposure) and speeds ranging to 1/500 second, and are equipped with helical focusing mounts for manual setting of distance. A rising lens boards allows perspective control.
